The Brexit Plan

The government’s objectives for Brexit were finally declared by the Prime Minister in recent weeks. Her long-awaited speech was met with very mixed and often unnuanced reactions, highlighting the lingering societal divisions of the referendum campaign. Ironically, unity struck me as the opening theme of the speech, in sharp contrast to the apparent Brexit mentality of separation.

An Air of Crisis

London breached its legal air pollution limit for the whole year in the first five days of 2017, with nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions on Brixton Road yielding the first failure in much the same way as other key routes in recent years. According to the EFRA Select Committee (Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs), air pollution causes up to 50,000 early deaths each year. The committee has described the problem as a “public health emergency” requiring immediate action.
