I heard a news piece on the radio about local residents in many cases being let down by developers who fail to deliver the promises made as part of their planning permission, and the failure of the system to resolve or prevent these problems. The Housing and Planning Bill 2015-16 currently passing through Westminster will hopefully address some issues.

The Other Place

The House of Lords has been in the spotlight once again, not over the gunpowder plot, but over the tax credits debacle. The problems peaked when opposition Peers voted down the government’s bill to cut tax credits by £4.4bn, and then attempted to have it completely scrapped. This was despite the longstanding convention that Lords don’t debate financial measures, in accordance with the principle that representation and taxation are inextricably linked: so much so that the American colonies went to war over it.
